| Gallery 1313 is situated
on Queen Street West in Toronto's sleazily fashionable Parkdale district. I
first heard about their annual fashion show from my buddy Judy Poole, an artist
living in Toronto. Judy and I met at art school in Ottawa in the 90's. She is
really into wearable art and had been in the gallery's show a few times and had
also participated in Black Tie 2 Bondage in Ottawa. It all happened on a hot and steamy Friday night in August 2001 during one of the city's worst heat waves. The show was held in their exhibition space and adjacent courtyard. I shared a dressing room with 3 people with no clothes what-so-ever who were being body painted up all abstract like, and a women in a thong-only get-up with her skin decorated by a snakeskin pattern in vegetable dye, carrying a few large constrictor type snakes with cutesy names. Of course I was sporting my ever popular Naked Man Costume (I guess they thought all the "undressed" types would be most comfortable sharing a room). I was one of the first on the runway and did a strip tease to Groove is in the Heart". I did some bumping and grinding "table dance style" on an upside-down dairy crate to the Dee-lite of the audience and whipped out my gi-normous 3 foot long dryer hose of a unit at the end. I have done this number numerous times but this was a first for Toronto. I don't have any snaps of me "naked" at this show, but you can get an idea of what "it" looks like by visiting some other areas of my site - they're easy to find, just look for the pink guy. |
