Dogs should not be fed for some hours before a stud service and they should be rested afterwards. In hot weather, it is better to keep all stud work for the early morning or evening. If the mating takes place indoors, be sure you have a rough surface on which the dog does not slip - a door mat is very suitable. A dog must feel secure, particularly with a bitch bigger than himself. When a bitch is very fat and broad, especially if she is tall in addition, it is better not to turn the dog at once when he has mated the bitch, but let him wait for a few moments and then do so very slowly and carefully. It is very easy for a dog to slip out with large broad bitches. Be sure the dog has something to stand on when turned if the bitch is much taller - my own dogs usually put their feet on my lap.
